The area around the city of Nagpur has a long history as one of India’s most important centers for silver mining. Since ancient times, it was considered to be an important location, with many rulers making nuggets deposited locally into their vaults. Although gold and silver have traditionally been present in small quantities due to flooding and frequent placer deposits through later ages, there are substantial findings at sites that date back to the old days.
Although regular silver mining of nuggets did not occur in Nagpur until the twentieth century, it wasn’t long before the local government started to encourage citizens to try their hand at this lucrative labor. In 1859, a survey by British Army officer Colonel Dobb was conducted and suggested that gold pans – where small amounts are collected for sharecropping of up to 1250 gm silver per year – be provided. And from then on, silver mining in the area flourished.
Later, the government also encouraged citizens to focus on gold rather than silver, but this doesn’t mean it wasn’t an important business for many years after that – indeed, the demand for nuggets by locals meant that precious metals were still being deposited at low levels up until 20th century. Today only about 200 tons of gold and 100 tons of silver are produced every year from what’s leftover (or abandoned).
